Gallas is captain: It’s official

In a surprising move, Le Boss has opted to hand king-moaner William Gallas the captain’s armband for the new season. It was widely-expected that the role would be given to Gilberto given that he deputised so ably for Thierry Henry for such long periods last season.
Le Boss has made his mind up and confirms the decision on Arsenal.com. “The captain will be William Gallas,. There will also be two vice-captains, Kolo Toure and Gilberto.
“I feel centre back is always the best position to lead on the pitch and it is Gallas who has more experience at the back. But Gilberto has always been a great captain and Kolo Toure has a stature too.”
The decision to install Gallas as captain is sure to be met with mixed approval by fans. As I mentioned a few days ago, Gallas has not even been with the Club for a full season and even missed a huge chunk of that campaign through injury. Yet the thing that irks Arsenal fans most is that when he returned to action he moaned, whined and moaned some more about the state of our Club. Gallas even openly questioned his very own future at Arsenal before the players reconvened for pre-season training. That’s what makes the decision to hand him the armband so contentious.
Yes, we have seen a chirpier William Gallas in the past few weeks, talking a much more positive and sensible game. But I’d bet Gallas has known that he will be the new captain for some time now and this is probably why he has been in a much more upbeat frame of mind.
Given that our squad is young, our players need a captain they can look up to both on and off the pitch. Let’s hope that Le Boss is right. Thankfully, he usually is.

Shocker.
Can't believe Gilberto wasn't picked. He led us for 75% of last season, and did a bloody-good job considering.
